THE SRI LANKA BUDDHIST TEMPLE

The Siri Jayanti Youth Section
The Siri Jayanti Youth Section, formed in December 1988, has contributed tremendously to the activities of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in the propagation of the Dhamma, Community Services and Sports programmes. Under the able leadership of the Youth’s Chairman Mr. Jimmy Ong many activities were conducted, which include the Mass Observance of Eight Precepts, Blood Donation Campaigns, Dhamma and language classes. The Youth section was also responsible for starting the publication fund, which saw the printing of many Dhamma Books.

The Youth Section provides a platform for the young to become good Buddhists, and to be worthy and loyal citizens of the country, and eventually become the leaders of tomorrow.

The Siri Jayanti Ladies Section
In line with one of the aims of the Association, a Ladies’ Section was formed in 1979. The Ladies’ Section has since its inception been actively participationg in all activities of the temple, in the preparation and offering of dana for the Sangha, as well as organising Bodhi Pujas and Full Moon Day prayers. During the early days when donations were lacking, a group of devoted ladies from the Ladies Section always made it a point to ensure that the monks of the temple were well cared for. These ladies like Mrs. siriyawathie sammie, Madam Karunawathy De Silva, Madam Amarawathy Munesinghe, Madam Sumanawathy Nanayakkara, Madam Sumana Wester, Madam Nandawathy Charlie, Mrs. Leela James and Mrs. James Magnus made it a point to get themselves involved in the preparation of food for devotees during major functions like Wesak, Kathina and Maha Pirith. They started a fund where each lady member was required to donate a sum of money monthly, which in turn was used to purchase important items for the kitchen and shrine hall. The temple has benefited much not only from the contribution of these ladies but also the scores of other ladies, both chinese and Sinhalese, who have been a tower of strength to the committee of management.

It was re-organised on August 26, 1991 and today it fosters unity as well as goodwill among members and assiss in all the multifarious activities in the temple.
